Summary of Today’s Activities:

Rainy Monday, Enough Said! Today I meet with all of my classes, so each class runs about 45 minutes long.
Sports Medicine (2 &4)
After I graded the first quiz from Friday, I was content and disappointed all at the same time. Second period scored really well, fourth period not so much. I even broke down and gave fourth period a word bank to help them out (which second period didn't get) and they still scored lower. Even though my second period consists mostly of underclassmen and fourth period varies among the grades, second period is about half the class size as fourth and I believe there are a lot more distractions that the fourth period members have to overcome. But since I haven't had all members complete the quiz yet, I'm going to wait to go over it on Wednesday. So today's assignment focused on introducing Chapter 2 - Athletic Training. As a class, we brainstormed what personal characteristics an A.T. must obtain and then we took notes on the history of A.T. The last part of class, I assigned their new project which will be due next Monday and their blog posts that will be due this Friday.
PE (5th)
So finally our air conditioning is getting fixed in the gymnasium, but on the down side of that - we can only use half of the gym while they work on it. I get my class started with their daily exercises and then we move into our new unit - Volleyball. This year I'll be running all sports units as a Sport Education Model where you prepare the students to be responsible for their own purpose and education of the sport. I assigned the coaches and teams, but everyone on the team has their own responsibility (equipment manager, referee, scorekeeper) as well as being a player. I have used this model before and had tremendous results. At the end of class, the coaches worked with their team and learning ball control.
AP Statistics (6th)
We still have 2 people who haven't completed the quiz, so I'll wait until Wednesday to go over it. But overall, I'm very pleased with the scores and happy to be teaching a class with so many intrinsically- motivated students. Today we begin Chapter 1 and our lesson is focused on Displaying Distributions with Graphs. The students took notes, but I'm really excited about our M&M's activity on Wednesday! I assigned their homework and we ended our class session.
Middle PE - (7th )
Since only having half of a gym, it limits you to what you can do with a large group. So I improvised and had the students participate in more exercises. After that, I let the group play KnockOut Basketball where everyone participated and had fun doing it.

Reflection about Today’s Activities:

Mondays are always tough, but factor in a rainy day and Monday's exponentially grow to Mission: Impossible! However, I firmly believe that the students feed off of the teachers. So I took my mind somewhere else...  I was on a sunny beach somewhere and all of my students were there to serve me. I was happy with my lesson plans and I was happy with my students, so I made them feel welcomed in my presence. I have been around some teachers where it is obvious they do not even want the students in their classroom, but it is all about perspective. I try to build a symbiotic relationship with my kids where we feed off of each other for a common purpose. But note to self....keep candy around for rainy days, it might help!!

  1. Great idea to just picture yourself somewhere else like the beach. It will only hurt you in the end if you let your mindset get the best of you, as I'm sure you know!
