Entry 43

School Placement: Carlisle School
Cooperating Teacher: Mancino Craighead
Grade(s)/Subject(s) of Placement: 6-12 (Sports Medicine, AP Statistics, PE (6-12))
Date: 10/31/14

Summary of Today’s Activities:

Sports Medicine (2nd, 4th long periods) - I finally got around to assessing my students on Chapter 6: The Pre-Participation Physical Examination. The delay was due to my traveling, and 2 fall sports still competing in post-season play which affects about half of my students. The Friday before Halloween was the only date we were all in class together! After the quiz was over, I allowed the students to use the extra time to make up work for me or other teachers if they were all caught up in my class.
AP Statistics (6th, long) - Today's lesson focused on Scatterplots and Interpreting Scatterplots. After I checked homework, I put up the lesson via Powerpoint on the board; the PowerPoint consisted of notes and problems. At the end of class, I assigned the homework! This was actually a shorter class today because of the special activity planned this afternoon - SCA is showing a scary movie and selling popcorn in the auditorium for the whole upper school!
Mancino stayed with the middle school PE students while I helped chaperone the movie!!

Reflections of Today's Activities:

My students are starting to fall behind in my AP Statistics class - and quite a few have missed multiple classes. Being that it takes place during 6th period, right before lunch doesn't help either. Last year, I had more students participating and achieving at a much higher level and we were further along by this point as well. I think one thing that will help is a new seating chart - I've noticed my students are starting to get real chatty with one another and falling off task easier. My first approach - new seating chart and then I'll see what else I need to change; because it is evident that something has to give!
